Interview with Father Aleksa By Alyssa Linden and Andrew Britton
We swung by the church to ask Father Tom a few questions about his previous projects with St. Luke School and parish. Below are answers to questions we asked him.
Alyssa: Why or how did you come up with the idea of giving us Oplatki? Father Tom: “To me, customs are an important part to who we are. A lot of our customs are fading away, and I would like to bring them back. Every Christmas Eve, my family and I would celebrate wigilia. Wigilia is a meatless meal. Here is where we shared Oplatki. I want all of you to be a part of my tradition.” Andrew: Do you have any special treats or activities coming up for St. Luke? Father Tom: “I want to do a few other things, like having the 8th graders give ashes on Ash Wednesday. Then for the whole parish and school, I hope that they will participate in the simple super every Wednesday during Lent. Here we will eat soup and bread. This is a time to think about not what we’ve given up, but what we can give. I would also like to go around classrooms and talk about Holy Week, if they would want me to. I love Holy Week, and I love when people ask me questions about this special time of the year.” Alyssa: How did you come up with the idea for the Advent wreath ceremony? Father Tom: “I personally did not organize it, but I worked with Mrs. Minick to make it happen.” Andrew: Why are the Blessings of the Rooms important to you? Father Tom: “It is a part of the tradition. They used to use chalk over the doors before the papers….20+C+M+B+10. Classrooms in schools are like a home away from a home.” Alyssa: Why do you enjoy being at St. Luke School? Father Tom: “St. Luke is a wonderful place to be. The teachers and staff are great, and the students are active, smart, and support one another. I have never found the same kind of spirit anywhere else.”
We would all like to thank Father Tom for his contributions to St. Luke School. We appreciate him so much! Father Tom was temporarily assigned to a church in Franklin, Pennsylvania called St. Patrick’s. Because of his temporary reassignment, Father Tom regrets having to cancel his Lenten plans for St. Luke Parish. We’re glad he is back now and look forward to learning more from him in the upcoming months. |

The Library Pets By Andrew Britton The library has many different unique pets. To start, I am going to talk about a very soft, fluffy tailed animal. It has white fur with black speckled spots all over its pelt. Can you guess who this animal is? It’s Smore, the bunny! Smore loves to eat romaine lettuce. Surprisingly, she doesn’t like carrots! When Smore starts to run laps around the cage Mrs. Mielnik lets her out at the end of the day and she runs around the library. A little while later, Mrs. Mielnik’s aids try to catch Smore, but she’s too fast for them. It takes about 5 minutes just to catch the bunny! If you haven’t seen Smore yet, make sure you do.
