Grade 1

When your child enters first grade at Saint Luke School, he/she feels an instant welcoming and a sense of belonging to a classroom community. Children and teachers work together to achieve a learning atmosphere where the children feel comfortable and secure as they begin their journey to becoming successful students.

Religion:
Children in the first grade identify how and why the world began, discover the importance of self and family, and recognize Jesus as the example of the way we should live our lives. First grade children participate in weekly Mass and regular instruction with our priests.

Language Arts:
Language arts take our children from building on word identification skills to reading and writing sentences and short stories. Phonics, spelling, and grammar are incorporated into our daily reading lessons.

Mathematics:
Math begins with basic skills and concepts of patterns, addition, subtraction, geometry/fractions, money, telling time, measurement, and estimation. Manipulatives and hands-on activities enhance the learning of these concepts.

Science & Social Studies:
Science and Social Studies are taught independently, as well as being incorporated throughout the curriculum.

Handwriting:
Our Handwriting model is D’Nealian print. Primary grades use this model as the basis for a very easy transition into cursive writing.
