Grade 2
Religion:
The main focus in religion is learning the parts of the Mass, becoming familiar with sacraments, and preparing for the sacrament of Reconciliation.
Language Arts:
Two basal readers include a nice variety of fiction/nonfiction stories. Spelling, grammar, decoding skills, comprehension and writing are incorporated weekly into our stories.
Mathematics:
Math is a challenging program that begins with review of basic facts. The children are introduced to place values, counting money, addition and subtraction with regrouping, basic concepts in geometry and measurement, and problem solving.
Science, Social Studies & Health:
The teachers continue to stress the Pennsylvania standards in each area and further develop the concepts previously introduced in Kindergarten and first grade. Teachers strive to include hands-on learning and cooperative projects that flow from the themes in reading.
Technology:
Students visit the technology lab weekly to help encourage the use of the Reading Counts program and to develop beginning keyboarding skills. Students also have daily access to classroom computers.
Classroom Extras:
There are daily read alouds to the students, outdoor recess, and a behavior management program that includes group rewards and individual prizes. Special events and field trips are incorporated throughout the year to further advance what the students have learned in the classroom.
