This year the fifth grade students will be reading the book "The Jacket" by Andrew Clements. The books will be given to each student on the last day of school. Please have your student read the book over the summer and then return it to school on the first day. It is important that this book be read over summer because it will be used in a project the first week of school. The book is also on Reading Counts and can be used to help the students reach their first goal in September. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Sixth Grade:
You may choose any book you want but please follow this criteria:
- The book should be at or above your reading level.
- It should be a book you've never read before.
- This book should be something you will enjoy! We are sending home a book order. You may purchase a book from this book order, or you may just want to find a book on your own.
We are also sending home a book report form (or you may pick up a copy in the office during regular office hours) for you to fill out after you have read the book. The summary should be in your own words and must have a beginning, middle, and end. Use the back of the paper or looseleaf if you have to. This report will be due on the first day of school.
Seventh Grade:
Woohoo! It's time to start thinking about summer including the beach, sun, fun and summer reading!! To encourage and motivate students and families to read for pleasure and to help school age children maintain their reading skills while on vacation, all students entering grades seven and eight will be required to read a book this summer. The goal of our summer reading program is to provide students and teachers with an opportunity to discuss literature together, and to create an atmosphere that will foster a lifelong love of reading. All students will be required to pass a Reading Counts quiz on the assigned book during the first week of the 2011-2012 school year.
Also, students will be held accountable for their understanding of the assigned novel through a variety of activities in English class. It is strongly recommended that each student obtain a copy of the assigned book for use in class. Students entering seventh grade next year are required to read Tuck Everlasting written by Natalie Babbitt. To help you obtain your copy of the required book, I have sent the information to the local book stores including The Erie Book Store located at 137 East 13th Street.
