It is very important that your child is able to AUTOMATICALLY read the kindergarten sight words.
Our first reading stories build on these words and you want your child to be able to jump right in and feel,
”I can do this….I know these words!!! This is EASY!”
It makes such a difference if your child feels success right from the beginning.
Here is the list of words that your child learned in Kindergarten and must know for the start of first grade….
see, the , I, you, a, come
am, from, go, we, have, little
do, are, look, they, like, with
my, here, green, blue, yellow, is, he, was, me, for, she
to, said, one, two, three, four, five, where, that, what, of

The first 2 weeks or more of first grade we spend a LOT of time on classroom routines and developing a sense of community within “OUR CLASSROOM”.
We do begin our academic studies, but we spend a good amount of time getting comfortable with first grade and our new friends.
PLEASE help to get your child used to the changes of first grade ~ we only have one recess time and we do not have any kind of a rest time during the day…..these seem to be the biggest adjustments to the life of a first grader….
BUT…we DO have a simple snack every day, we DO go outside every day for play time (or stay inside to play if it is raining or very cold), we DO get our very own desks in first grade, we DO get our own books to keep in our desks, we DO get 8th grade buddies, we DO get to buy ice cream every day at lunch (if you have money) and we DO tons of awesome things during our first grade school year!!!!!!!

We will wait until school is underway for a few weeks before we begin any star students

We encourage your child to bring a watter bottle to school every day to keep hydrated. However, it must be a pull up lid or a flip-top lid. It cannot be a screw on lid as too many times the entire bottle spills all over the desks and everyone ends up with wet papers and books. Thanks! Remember to keep water bottles out of bookbags so books do not get wet.
Here is an interesting idea…
WATER BOTTLE SOCKS
Help students stay cool by letting them keep water bottles on their desks. Eliminate the problem of “sweaty” bottles that dampen desktops by asking each student to bring a sock from home. Then have the student slide her water bottle inside the sock to prevent leaking and sweating. The sock can also be used to wipe up any spills. What a “sock-sational” idea!
