Soles4Souls

I remember my first pair of heels.  I was in ninth grade and my mother took me to Richard’s for a pair of navy blue suede pumps with a navy satin ribbon woven into the suede from the toe to the instep, ending in a tiny navy bow.  That was probably the beginning of my interest in beautiful shoes.  Going barefoot was always an option for me, but never a necessity.

This interest in footwear has not escaped my friends.  At Christmas my Kris Kringle made a donation in my name to Soles4Souls, an organization dedicated to Changing the World, One Pair at a Time.®  Since 2005 this charity has distributed over 7 million free shoes, one pair every nine seconds!

This Lent our parish is collecting new shoes to distribute through Saint Martin Center.  Saint Luke School is accepting monetary donations to assist Soles4Souls in its mission to buy and ship shoes to people in need in such countries as Haiti, Kenya, Nepal and the United States.  The web site www.soles4souls.org has more information.

How many sneakers are in your closet or scattered under beds.  Are you able to send a nickel for each pair?  How many flip flops are tossed around bedroom floors?  Are you able to send a penny for each pair?  How many boots fill your entryway?  Are you able to send a quarter for each pair?  How many dress shoes are in boxes, neatly lined up on shoe racks?  Are you able to send a dime for each pair?

The picture is clear.  Please help us make a difference.  “Much will be required for the person entrusted with much (Luke 12:48)” For those of us with too many shoes, this is the opportunity to recognize that too many have none.  If you are a parent, give your child the opportunity to make a difference.  If you are an adult, be the one to make a difference.

On Easter Sunday, be the individual who walked the Lenten journey and made a difference.

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in Saint Luke School, a school steeped in tradition yet contemporary in educational applications.

In 1954 the Sisters of Mercy sold part of an orchard to the Diocese of Erie and Father Robert Goodill was appointed the first pastor of Saint Luke Parish. The seeds of Saint Luke School were planted when ground was broken on October 9, 1954, and a different kind of orchard began to grow. Saint Luke School opened on September 28, 1955. Thirty-four eighth graders graduated in 1956, the first of over 3,000 young men and women to live Father Goodill’s school motto Goodness, Knowledge, Self-Discipline, Teach Me O Lord. In 1998 we added an early childhood wing to house our preschool, all day kindergartens, and first grades.

During these years we have remained “Catholic to the Core” while teaching children of all faiths to be value-centered learners for life. A different orchard is thriving on East 38th Street, and the living harvest is dynamic and diverse. Some children are the beginning of what we know will be a tradition for their families. Some children are the third generation from their family to benefit from SLS opportunities. All children are given an equal chance to learn from an experienced faculty.

As a Catholic school we attend Mass weekly and our pastor, Monsignor L. Thomas Snyderwine teaches at all levels and offers Reconciliation weekly. Non-Catholic families comprise 8% of our total community. Small classes (classes range from 15 to 25 children) ensure optimum conditions for teaching and learning.

We are firmly rooted in solid language arts, math, science, and social studies curricula that are keyed to Pennsylvania state standards. A certified guidance counselor is part of our staff and children are taught weekly by licensed art, music, and physical education teachers. Our paid librarian oversees a fully automated collection of over 12,000 holdings and our technology teacher directs all acquisitions, teaches and maintains our computer system.

Because we are financially stable we look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm. Please contact us for information about visiting Saint Luke School and the process for application. We welcome your interest!
